What winners did in elite amateur bouts
Amateur boxing changed its rules in 2013, and a study of 50 World Championship bouts measured the sport that came after. Boxers kept up about 1.55 actions a second. In a typical minute that meant around 21 punches, 3.6 defensive moves and 56 changes of level. The authors describe the fights as long range, with straight punches and more footwork, against the short-range hooks of the years before 2013.
Winners threw more straight punches in the first round, more of them with the lead hand. In the third round they landed more and threw fewer punches for each one that landed. The authors’ advice to coaches: build a straight punch with both hands, and accuracy that gets better as the bout goes on.
The format suits anyone getting ready for an amateur bout, and anyone who wants a short session they can go at hard: 9 minutes of boxing in all.
The protocol
3 rounds of 3 minutes with 1 minute of rest between them. That is the whole Elite and U19 bout under World Boxing rules.
U17 bouts keep the 3 rounds and the minute of rest, with 2-minute rounds. That timer is in the list above.
Each round is judged on its own and none can be scored a draw, so every round is one you can win.
A real round runs long. Olympic rounds in the 2015 study lasted about 200 seconds each, and under World Boxing rules the clock stops whenever the referee calls Time.

Sessions to try
These are our suggestions. Where one follows a published source, that source is cited under it.
- Bout rehearsal
3 rounds of 3:00 at the pace you would fight, with 1:00 between. Box each round as if it is the one that decides the bout.
- Straight punches
4 rounds on the bag, jab and cross only, from range. Step in, land two, step out at an angle.
- Accuracy
3 rounds on the pads. Round 1 at a steady pace, round 2 faster, round 3 at full speed with every punch on the target.
- Sparring
3 or 4 rounds with a partner at controlled power. Press Pause whenever the coach stops the work, as a timekeeper would.
Shadow box for 2 rounds before the first bell.
Common mistakes
Pacing yourself like a professional. Three rounds are short enough to work hard from the first bell.
Giving away round 1. Each round is scored by itself, so a slow start is a round you cannot get back.
Loading up on hooks at close range. Since the 2013 rules, winners have done more of their work with straight punches from distance.
Training with a longer rest. The minute is in the rules, and if you get used to two, the real corner will feel short.
Questions
How many rounds are in amateur boxing?
Three. World Boxing rules give every bout 3 rounds with 1 minute of rest between them, for Elite, U19 and U17 boxers alike.
How long are amateur boxing rounds?
3 minutes for Elite and U19 boxers. U17 boxers, who turn 15 or 16 in the year of the event, box 2-minute rounds.
How is amateur boxing scored?
Five judges score each round on the 10-point must system, and every round needs a winner. A blow counts when it lands with the knuckle part of the glove and has the weight of the body or shoulder behind it.
Six palettes, and a phase keeps its meaning in all of them
The same four grounds, drawn six ways. Each is solved so that get ready, work, rest and done stay apart, and so the clock stays readable from across a gym. Pick one and the whole page turns with it; this browser remembers the choice.
The app
The same clock, in your pocket
Bursta is being finished for phones. Android comes first and iPhone after it. It is the timer you have above, built as an app: the same reading of the wall clock every frame, so a locked screen, a phone call or a backgrounded app does not make it drift.
It keeps sounding with the screen off
The bell lands with the phone locked in your bag and your music still playing. A page in a tab cannot do that.
Your own workouts, and a record of them
A builder, a library you name and reorder, a history that fills itself in, and a calendar with repeats and reminders.
Made to be read while you are breathing hard
Six palettes, five text sizes, and the phase in the colour of the whole screen. English and Ukrainian.
