How a wrestling match gets harder period by period
In a 2015 study, 9 elite college wrestlers wrestled freestyle matches of three 2-minute periods. Heart rate averaged 81% of maximum in the first period, 88% in the second and 92% in the third. Blood lactate rose from 7.6 mmol/L after the first period to 10.4 after the second, and stayed near that level (11.5) after the third. On the 6 to 20 effort scale, the wrestlers rated each period harder: 13, then 15, then 17.
Over a tournament the load adds up. In a simulated two-day event, 12 college wrestlers who had cut 6% of their body weight the week before lost lower-body power and upper-body strength as the matches went on, and their lactate rose after every match.
Three equal periods suit high school wrestlers and anyone conditioning for folkstyle. The college match runs three, two and two minutes, which this timer cannot set in one run.
The protocol
3 periods of 2 minutes. Oklahoma’s state association manual sets this for its regional and state tournaments, which run under the national high school rules book.
A college match is 7 minutes: a 3-minute first period, then two of 2. Three periods of 2:00 give you the college match without its first minute.
Neither the NCAA rules nor Oklahoma’s manual times the gap between periods; it lasts while the positions are chosen and set. The 30 seconds here are United World Wrestling’s break between periods.

This timer rings a bell as each period starts and ends, warns ten seconds before each period ends, has a fullscreen key, and keeps the screen awake where the browser allows; it is free and needs no account. Keep this tab in front, because a browser may pause the sound of a tab you cannot see.
Sessions to try
These are our suggestions. Where one follows a published source, that source is cited under it.
- Live goes
3 periods of 2:00 of live wrestling from neutral, with 0:30 between. Change partners every period.

- Match positions
Period 1 from neutral, period 2 from bottom, period 3 from top. Score or escape before the bell.
- Shark tank
One wrestler stays in for 5 periods of 1:00 while a fresh partner comes in each time. Set Rounds to 5, Work to 1:00 and Rest to 0:10.
- Tournament day
Two full matches with a break between. In Edit intervals, open Sets and set breaks, then set Sets to 2 and Rest between sets to 5:00.
Common mistakes
Taking a long break between periods. In a match the next period starts as soon as both wrestlers are set, so shorten Rest when you can.
Pacing for the first period. In the 2015 study heart rate kept climbing to the third period and effort felt hardest there, so the third period is where conditioning shows.
Drilling only from your feet. A match puts you on top and on bottom too, so train both.
Forgetting the second day. Power and strength kept falling over the two days of the 2001 tournament study, so practise wrestling well while tired.

Six palettes, and a phase keeps its meaning in all of them
The same four grounds, drawn six ways. Each is solved so that get ready, work, rest and done stay apart, and so the clock stays readable from across a gym. Pick one and the whole page turns with it; this browser remembers the choice.
The app
The same clock, in your pocket
Bursta is being finished for phones. Android comes first and iPhone after it. It is the timer you have above, built as an app: the same reading of the wall clock every frame, so a locked screen, a phone call or a backgrounded app does not make it drift.
It keeps sounding with the screen off
The bell lands with the phone locked in your bag and your music still playing. A page in a tab cannot do that.
Your own workouts, and a record of them
A builder, a library you name and reorder, a history that fills itself in, and a calendar with repeats and reminders.
Made to be read while you are breathing hard
Six palettes, five text sizes, and the phase in the colour of the whole screen. English and Ukrainian.
