How hard a 2-minute round still is
England’s international amateur boxers were tested when their bouts were 4 rounds of 2 minutes. After a contest, blood lactate averaged 13.5 mmol/L in the seniors and 14.1 in the juniors. The author read those values as a call for a well-developed anaerobic capacity, the power behind short, hard bursts.

What changes is the ratio. The round drops to 2 minutes and the rest stays at 1, so you work twice as long as you recover, against three times as long in a 3-minute round.
Two-minute rounds suit beginners, young boxers, anyone coming back after a break, and drills where form fades late in a longer round.
The protocol
3 rounds of 2 minutes with 1 minute of rest. This is the U17 bout under World Boxing rules.
U17 boxers are those who turn 15 or 16 in the year of the event. At 17 they move up to U19 and 3-minute rounds, and the rest stays at 1 minute.
World Boxing sets no round for U15 or Masters boxers. Their confederation or national federation does, so check its rules before you set the timer.
This timer rings a bell as each round starts and ends, warns ten seconds before each round ends, has a fullscreen key, and keeps the screen awake where the browser allows; it is free and needs no account. Keep this tab in front, because a browser may pause the sound of a tab you cannot see.
Sessions to try
These are our suggestions. Where one follows a published source, that source is cited under it.
- First rounds
4 rounds of 2:00 on the bag with 1:00 between. Jab and cross only, and reset your stance after every combination.
- Youth bout
3 rounds of 2:00 at the pace a U17 boxer would fight them, with a coach calling one instruction in each rest.
- Combinations
6 rounds on the pads. Pick one three-punch combination per round and throw it fast and clean until the bell.
- Step up
Once 6 rounds of 2:00 feel steady, move Work to 2:30 in Edit intervals, then to 3:00. Leave Rest at 1:00.
Common mistakes
Sprinting the first minute. Start at a pace you can hold, then lift it for the last 30 seconds.
Cutting the rest as well. Only the round got shorter in the U17 rules; the minute in the corner stayed.
Throwing arm punches when tired. Turn your hips on every shot, even in the last 20 seconds.
Staying on 2-minute rounds for good. If you plan to box U19 or Elite, you will need 3 minutes.
Questions
Are boxing rounds 2 or 3 minutes?
Both. Professional rounds under the ABC Unified Rules are 3 minutes, and so are World Boxing’s Elite and U19 rounds. U17 rounds under World Boxing are 2 minutes. The rest is 1 minute in all of them.

Are 2-minute rounds good for beginners?
Yes. You can keep good form for the whole round while your fitness catches up. When 6 rounds of 2 minutes feel steady, move up to 3. That advice is ours.
How many rounds should a beginner do?
Start with 3 or 4 rounds of 2 minutes and add one a week while your form holds, and those figures are ours.
Six palettes, and a phase keeps its meaning in all of them
The same four grounds, drawn six ways. Each is solved so that get ready, work, rest and done stay apart, and so the clock stays readable from across a gym. Pick one and the whole page turns with it; this browser remembers the choice.
The app
The same clock, in your pocket
Bursta is being finished for phones. Android comes first and iPhone after it. It is the timer you have above, built as an app: the same reading of the wall clock every frame, so a locked screen, a phone call or a backgrounded app does not make it drift.
It keeps sounding with the screen off
The bell lands with the phone locked in your bag and your music still playing. A page in a tab cannot do that.
Your own workouts, and a record of them
A builder, a library you name and reorder, a history that fills itself in, and a calendar with repeats and reminders.
Made to be read while you are breathing hard
Six palettes, five text sizes, and the phase in the colour of the whole screen. English and Ukrainian.
